Stony Point qualifies for semifinals with win over Maryland

Nigro blanks Railroaders on two-hitter; Pinelli has three RBI

BRISTOL, Ct. -- Frankie Nigro threw a two-hitter yesterday as Stony Point defeated the Railroaders (Md.), 10-0 in a four-inning game at the Little League baseball majors Mid-Atlantic Regional at Breen Field.

Stony Point improved to 3-0 for the tournament and qualified for the semfinals Friday. Stony Point closes out pool play with Toms River National (N.J.) tomorrow, 7 p.m. With a win, Stony Point will be seeded first and would play Friday, 3 p.m. Council Rock Newtown (Pa.) is currently 2-0 and has games with the Railroaders (Md.) today and Capitol City (D.C.) tomorrow.

"Frankie kept the ball low and the defense made the plays for him and us," Stony Point manager Brian Coyle said.

Coyle pointed out that Stony Point turned two double plays. Third baseman Billy Rotella started the first double play in the first inning and second baseman Rob McFadden turned one in the fourth inning, tagging the baserunner going to second and flipping to first baseman Dan Wirchansky.

Stony Point scored twice in the second inning as Austin Pinelli was at it again. Pinelli crushed a two-run homer, his second home run of the regional, giving the District 18 champion a 2-0 lead. Coyle said the ball cleared the center-field fence and travelled at least 270 feet.

In the third inning, John Greeley had a run-scoring double and McFadden closed out the three-run inning with a RBI single.

Eric Sandusky and McFadden each had a hit and scored two runs, as did Greeley. Brian Bohlander also had a RBI.
