District 18 Tournament-Baseball

10-11-year-old

Patrone two-run double gives Pearl River walk-off win, District 18 title

Pearl River beats South Orangetown, 6-5 to win second consecutive crown

ORANGEBURG -- Matt Patrone was thinking about one thing yesterday as he faced a two-out, two-strike situation in the bottom of the sixth inning of the District 18 Little League baseball 10-11-year-o Haverstald final.

“I wanted to help the team so I was looking for a base hit to drive in a run,” said the 11-year-old Patrone, a seventh-grader-to-be at Pearl River Middle School.

Pearl River was trailing South Orangetown by one run and its reign as District 18 champion was on the verge of ending. However, Patrone would change this with one swing of the bat.

Patrone drilled a line drive to deep center field, scoring two runs, including Kevin Scrima with the winning run as Pearl River capped a two-out rally with a 6-5 win at South Orangetown Little League.

Pearl River won its second consecutive District 18 10-11-year-old title. Pearl River moves on to the Section 4 championships, beginning Wednesday, July 28 through Tuesday, Aug. 3 at Walkill Little League in Walkill. Pearl River will play District 20 champion Harrison, Tuesday, 5:30 p.m.

This is also the second year in-a-row that Patrone has smacked the game-winning hit. Last year, also against South Orangetown on the same field, Patrone belted a grand slam over the center-field fence, giving Pearl River the lead for good.

Patrone said he had forgotten about last year’s huge hit. Instead, his focus was on the present.

“I was a little nervous, but when I stepped into the box I calmed myself down,” Patrone said.

Prior to Patrone’s at bat, Dolan Ocasal grounded into a force out, scoring C.J. McGee, but Pearl River was down to its final out. Kevin Scrima fell behind in the count, 1-2, then spanked a single into right field for his third hit of the game. Conor Buckhout drew a four-pitch walk, loading the bases. After South Orangetown pitcher John Daly got two quick strikes, Patrone applied the aluminum on an 0-2 pitch. The ball rocketed off of his bat for the walk-off hit.

“It felt great when I hit it and I was watching it the whole way,” Patrone said. “I stayed on first base because I didn’t want to get called out. I’m happy that we won the championship.”

Scrima, who now has two District 18 championships to join older sister, Katie, who starred on Pearl River varsity softball’s 2008 and ‘09 Section 1-winning teams.

“When Matt blasted that line drive to center field, I thought it was going to be caught, at first,” said the 11-year-old Scrima, a sixth-grader-to-be at Pearl River Middle School. “It feels great to win on a walk off.”

Pearl River manager Mark Ocasal pointed out that these teams have met five times in the last two District 18 tournaments and all five games have come down to the home team’s last at-bat.

“We are two evenly-matched teams,” Ocasal said.

Ocasal said Patrone felt his hitting had been a little off recently so the coaching staff worked with him in batting practice prior to the game.

“Matt had been popping up so we focused with him on driving the ball back at the pitcher,” Ocasal said.

South Orangetown trailed, 3-1 entering the fourth inning but John Mesagno evened the score with a two-run homer to center field.     Mesagno gave his team the lead, 4-3, one inning later with a two-out single, scoring Daly.

Justin Powell increased South Orangetown’s lead to 5-3 in the seventh, crushing a home run to right field.

Haverstraw sweeps to District 18 senior title with win over West Nyack

Victors collect 12 hits in 11-1 victory, Michelitch throws five-inning no-hitter

        Tony Pinciaro

        TonyP@RocklandSportsNews.com

WEST HAVERSTRAW -- The sting of the 2009 all-star season still resonated in Bobby Michelitch's memory.

Michelitch recalled last summer, when he and then Haverstraw senior all-star teammates were denied a chance to play for the District 18 title with elimination.

"That bothered me alot because I felt we had a good team last year, too," said the 17-year-old Michelitch, a senior-to-be at North Rockland High School.

Michelitch welcomed a new group of teammates this season, hungry to give Haverstraw what has been an elusive senior title. And, as a result of Michelitch's pitching and the offense yesterday, Haverstraw came away with an 11-1 win in five innings over West Nyack to win the District 18 senior baseball title at Peck's Pond.

Haverstraw moves on to the Section 4 Championships, Saturday, July 24 through Tuesday, July 27 at Briarcliff High School in Westchester County. Haverstraw will open against the District 19 champion, 11:45 a.m., Saturday, July 24.

Michelitch threw a no-hitter and struck out six as the game was stopped after 4 1/2 innings because of the 10-run rule.

"This feels great and we feel that we can really go far, hopefully," Michelitch said. "This whole group has never won a district championships so to win this is big."

The title was also big for Haverstraw manager Matt Iametti and coaches Todd Green and Mike Kakoullis. The trio were members of the 2004 Haverstraw senior all-star team which won the District 18 and state titles and advanced to the regionals, where it went 2-2. Iametti said the team's first loss in the regional was to eventual world champion, Freehold, N.J.

"This is just as good, if not sweeter," said Iametti, who experienced a Gatorade shower following the awards presentation.

Iametti said this team reminds him of the 2004 Haverstraw team.

"We don't have one big stud," Iametti said. "They all enjoy playing together, they're tight-knit and they're all friends."

Even though Michelitch was the lone returnee from last year's Haverstraw team, he realized early this team could contend for a title.

"I just knew that we were going to have a good team from the beginning because we gelled together and we all knew each other so well," said Michelitch, who doubled, singled and scored three runs. "Also, me and a couple of the guys won the senior league championship and we realized that team was good."

Michelitch said the Iametti, Green and Kakoullis told the team about their senior all-star experience and let them know what the goal was.

"They wanted us to have the same ride they did," said Michelitch, who won two games, allowing two runs on three hits in 10 innings.

The start of the ride commenced, thanks to Michelitch's pitching and the an eight-run third inning. Haverstraw led 2-1 after two innings before erupting for eight runs on seven hits during the uprising. It was highlighted by a pair of two-run doubles from Mike Vigliotti and Nick Gregoriades and a two-run single by Justin Matos.

Lord Gomez finished 2 for 2 with two RBI, Danny Urena had two hits and a RBI and Vigliotti doubled and singled.

Ryan Leonard scored West Nyack's run on an error in the second inning.

District 18 Tournament - Baseball

Majors

Greeley tosses two-hitter as Stony Point wins District 18 majors' title

Two-run first inning helps complete undefeated run through tournament with 5-0 win over Ramapo

        Tony Pinciaro

        TonyP@RocklandSportsNews.com

POMONA -- John Greeley remembered how his younger brother, Steven, felt when his Stony Point 9-10-year-old team won the District 18 championship, so he was hoping to capture that same feeling.

"It was great to see him win because their team really improved alot during the season," said Greeley, 13, an eighth-grader-to-be at Fieldstone Secondary School. "He was pretty happy. I liked the idea of both of us winning."

John Greeley was able to join his brother as a District 18 champ, throwing a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts yesterday, sending Stony Point to a 5-0 win over Ramapo in the District 18 Little League baseball majors' division final at Reisman Park.

This is the second consecutive year these teams have played for the title. Stony Point advances to the Section 4 Championship at South Orangetown Little League beginning Tuesday, July 20, through Monday, July 29. Stony Point will play the District 21 (Mount Vernon/New Rochelle/Pelham) titlist in a first-round game Tueday, 6 p.m.

Stony Point completed a dominant march to the title, allowing a paltry two runs in five games. This was Greeley's second consecutive shut out of Ramapo, which has a high-octane offense. The victory also gives this Stony Point group a run of four straight District 18 titles, according to Stony Point manager Brian Coyle, beginning with the 9-10-year-old crown four years.

"This feels great, now we hope to the 11s win," Greeley said.

Along with his 10 strikeouts, Greeley helped himself with a solo home run with one out in the top of the sixth inning.

Greeley kept Ramapo off balance throughout the game. He had a dancing curveball and changeup which he used to set up his smoking fastball. Early on, catcher Ben Muller knew his batterymate had it all working.

"He was confident in the way he was throwing and his curveball was moving the way he wanted it," said Muller, 13, an eighth-grader to be at Fieldstone Secondary School. "John was on and he just kept hitting his location.

"John kept getting stronger as the game went on and he was getting his pitches to move even more."

Even though Greeley beat Ramapo earlier in the tournament, he knew he was facing a fired-up opponent, especially after Ramapo's huge win over South Orangetown in the losers' bracket final.

"Coming o ff of that big win I knew they'd have more intensity," Greeley said. "When you have that big hit like they did, I knew that would make them hungry and want it more."

Greeley, who needed just 82 pitches to complete the game, was consistently working ahead in the count, capitalizing on Ramapo's aggressive approach at the plate. He allowed a double to Kevin Horowitz in the second inning and a single to Krzysztof Zalewski in the fourth. He also robbed Zalewski of a hit in the first inning with an outstanding defensive play. Zalewski lined a shot back through the box, but Greeley reached across his body to snare the liner.

There was a scary moment in the fifth inning when a Greeley fastball caught Marco Petrovic square the cheek. Petrovic was able to walk off the field under his own power and had an ice pack on his cheek the remainder of the game.

Stony Point jumped out quickly in the first inning just like it had done in the teams' prior meeting. After Greeley grounded into a force out, he moved to second on a passed ball. Brian Bohlander, who had three RBI in the teams' first game, drilled a single to the right of second base, scoring Greeley. Eric Sandusky came in to pinch run for Bohlander and he would score when Billy Rotella's line drive up the middle skimmed its way to the fence for a run-scoring triple.

"Every game we want to score first and when we did that tonight, it goy our confidence up," said Muller, sipping a cool drink.

Ramapo starter Robert Iametti pitched well in defeat. After surrendering the two runs in the first inning, he held Stony Point to two hits ove the next four innings.

Coyle congratulated his team for winning the title and took it a step futher."

"This is the first team to win the 9s, 10s, 11s and 12-year-old titles," he said. "To do it four years in a row in a pretty tremendous accomplishment."

Even with the final result, Ramapo manager Jeff Liddy had nothing but praise for his team.

"I am extremely proud of this team," Liddy said. "We made the run last year to the final and we made it back to the final this year. We had an amazing win Monday. These boys are awesome.

"I have the utmost respect for Stony Point and my hats off to them. John Greeley is one of the best pitchers we've seen."

Stony Point 9-10-year-old baseball opens against Pine Bush

Stony Point 9-10-year-old softball plays first-round game

The Stony Point 9-10-year-old District 18 champions have had a lengthy break since winning the title, but one would never know it.

Stony Point has been working diligently in preparation for the Section 4 9-10-year-old baseball championships, being held at Patterson Little League complex in Patterson (Putnam County).

Stony Point will open today against district 19 champion, Pine Bush. The tournament runs today through the following Wednesday, July 21.

The Stony Point 9-10-year-old softball team will also open in its Section 4 Championships against Cornwall, 8 p.m. tonight ay Sherman Park Little League. The game was scheduled for yesterday, but was washed out. New City received a bye in the Section 4 softball majors championship and will begin Friday.

"We've been practicing for two hours every day and we've been practicing really hard," said first baseman Raymond Pacella. "It seems like the whole team stepped up and we are very excited for the upcoming games.  Our coach has high expectations for us so he works us very hard."

Stony Point went undefeated in winning the District 18 title, including two wins over rival Haverstraw. Now, Stony Point is perpared for the next step, but not without a few butterflies.

"I am nervous, but very anxious for the upcoming games and  I feel that my teammates are anxious to play and nervous just like me," Pacella said. "I think we are well-prepared."

Pacella is excited for the Stony Point softball team because his cousin, Daniella Chiorazzi, plays on the team. He is also psyched for Stony Point after winning the baseball majors' title. Teammate Steven Greeley's older brother, John, is an exccellent pitcher for the majors' title-team.

District 18 Tournament-Softball
Majors

New City beats Pearl River to win District 18 Majors' title
Second title in three years, Keaveney has four hits

NEW CITY -- New City came away from Sunday’s loss to Pearl River feeling good about itself.

Despite the final result, New City felt it began hitting the ball hard in the second half of the game. And, the last out of the game, a sinking line drive that Erica Collura made a great catch on, reinforced New City’s feelings.

New City came out swinging and immediately seized command, scoring seven runs in the first inning of an eventual 14-3 win in the District 18 Little League softball majors’ championship game.

This is the second time in three years New City has won the District 18 majors’ title. Manager Jim Capello guided New City to the 2008 title.

New City moves on to the Section 4 Championship beginning Wednesday, July 14 through Tuesday, July 20 at Beekman Recreation Park. New City drew a bye and will play the District 33 (Brewster)-District 21 winner, Thursday, 6 p.m.

“We just needed to get back to hitting the ball hard,” New City manager Bill Amatuzzo said. “It almost seemed like we were guiding the ball Sunday. I just wanted the girls to hit the ball hard and let the chips fall where they may.”

New City collected 15 hits, led by Briana Keaveney, who went 4 for 4, scored two runs and drove in a run. Danielle Borelli was 3 for 3 with two runs scored and two RBI and Herskowitz tripled, doubled and had two RBI.

Sarah Brauer, who had not started a game in a couple of weeks, earned the win.

The seven-run first inning was reminiscent of New City’s eight-run first inning against Haverstraw earlier in the tournamet, according to Amatuzzo.

Herskowitz delivered the key hit of the first inning, a two-run double. Melanie Lerche, Carly Amatuzzo and Borelli all had run-scoring singles in the uprising.

“I felt we were patient and we waited for pitches to drive,” Amatuzzo said. “Pearl River played great defense Sunday night. Instead of sitting back, making combat and finding holes, we got deep in counts and hit our pitches.”

Amatuzzo was proud of his team, especially Brauer, who allowed four hits and struck out two.

“I have always thought that we have the best No. 2 pitcher in the district in Sarah,” Amatuzzo said.

Amatuzzo enjoyed watching the girls post-game celebration.

“That is what it’s all about,” Amatuzzo said. “it’s about the girls, letting them play and having fun.”

Nine-run first inning sends Stony Point to District 18 championship over New City
Santini, Carey homer, Toscano has two hits, two RBI

STONY POINT -- New City closed out Sunday’s game with a run against Stony Point, then opened yesterday’s District 18 Little League softball minors’ division title game with two runs.

How would Stony Point react to this quick deficit? It did so with resounding authority.

Stony Point erupted for nine runs in the first inning and went on to an 18-8 win, in five innings, at Veteran’s Park.

Stony Point advances to the Section 4 Championship, opening Wednesday, July 14 through Tuesday, July 20 at Sherman Park and Kensico Little League in Westchester County. Stony Point will play the District 19 champion, manager Robert Alonso said was Cornwall, Wednesday, 8 p.m.

Carly Toscano had two hits, and Celia Santini and Rebecca Carey ripped home runs in the fourth inning. Carey hit a solo homer and three batters later, Santini jacked a three-run homer.

“I said to the girls that there was still a lot of game and we are a great hitting team,” said Alonso of a pep talk prior to his team’s first at-bat. “I wanted them to stay hungry, which they did, and drive the ball, which they did. And tonight, we capitalized on their errors.”

Daniella Chiorazzi got Stony Point going in the first inning with a two-run single to even the score. Victoria Alonso would add a two-run triple and Toscano a two-run single in the rally.

Winning the title was sweet for Alonso also. A former Stony Point Little League all-star during his youth, Alonso said there is nothing sweeter than winning the District 18 title with his daughter and this team.

Daly makes game-saving catch for final out

WEST NYACK -- Nanuet was charging back and appeared to be on the verge of tieing the score yesterday, but South Orangetown's Kyle Daly spoiled it.
The leftfielder came running in, went to his knees and caught James Bilcik's hot line drive to end the game and give seventh-seeded South Orangetown a 7-6 win over 10th-seeded Nanuet in the Rockland County 9-year-old baseball tournament at Germonds Park.

Mike Harrigan came into the game and struck out the next two batters to end the threat. Harrigan would face five batters and strike out all of them.
Nanuet was down to its last out in the game, but Aidan Gallagher and Chris Fisher singled. Matt Wain doubled to the gap in left center, scoring Gallagher. Fisher and Wain would also score on the play because of an error. James DiMola had two hits, scored two runs and played excellent defensively behind the plate, according to South Orangetown coach Tom Cameron. Ryan McGovern struck out the four batters he faced.

Diaz bases-loaded walk gives New City 4-3 win over Stony Point in seven innings
Guevarra strikes out 18, allows four hits; Stony Point's Williams records 16 strikeouts

     Tony Pinciaro

NEW CITY -- Reese Guevarra watched with anticipation standing on first base in the top of the seventh inning yesterday.
New City had the bases loaded with two outs and the score even with Stony Point. Sabrina Diaz stepped into the box in a pressure situation
"I believed Sabrina was going to put the ball in play for us because that was all we needed to get a run," Guevarra said.
Diaz responded with the discipline of a varsity player, staying focused and working a walk with the bases loaded to push across the winning run for a 4-3 victory in the District 18 Little League softball minors championship series at Strawtown Field.
As a result of New City's win, it forced a decisive game tonight, 7:30 p.m. at Veteran's Park in Stony Point. This was New City's fourth consecutive win since an opening-game loss in the tournament.
New City will play at least one more game because of Guevarra's performance. The 11-year-old sixth-grader-to-be at Felix Festa Middle School scattered four hits and struck out 18. She also drove in a run and scored a run. Stony Point pitcher Brianna Williams was excellent in defeat, allowing two hits and striking out 16.
"It was great," said Guevarra of the win. "We still have to win tomorrow, but I'm glad we are going to play tomorrow."
Stony Point had tied the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning and had the winning run on third base with one out, but Guevarra would not allow it to score.
Williams opened the top of the seventh with a strikeout, but Caroline Koch's slow chopper down the third-base line resulted in a hit. She moved to second on a wild pitch and was joined on the bases by Ailis Brady, who was  hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced on a passed ball before Guevarra walked. Following the second out, Diaz, who was 0 for 2 to that point, came up.
Diaz was ahead in the count, 3-1, but Williams threw a strike, making it a full count. With both teams' fans cheering at a fever pitch, Diaz took a high pitch for ball four, allowing Koch to scamper home with the go-ahead run.
"Sabrina was really disciplined," Guevarra said. "When she got the walk, I was so happy going to second base."
New City manager Tom Keaveney was happy for his girls and extremely proud of them because they executed the game plan. Keaveney knew that runs would be at a premium with two outstanding windmillers throwing, so he was thinking "small."
"Our goal was to scrape out some runs because we knew it was going to be a tough game," Keaveney said. "We wanted to play small ball and I felt we executed our small ball."
New City scored a run in the first inning as Ailis Daly bunted and was safe on an error. She would score on a Guevarra ground out. New City increased its lead to 3-0 in the third inning with Koch initiating the inning with a bunt. Stony Point committed a an error in the inning, resulting in Daly and Guevarra scoring.
Stony Point scored a run in the fourth as Victoria Alonso tripled and came in on a Daniella Chiorazzi grounder. Stony Point forced the extra inning with two runs in its last at-bat. Williams led off with a walk and Rebecca Casey hit a sharp single. An error in the outfield allowed Williams to race around the bases and score and Casey went to third. After an out, Chiorazzi singled in Casey, stole second and moved to third.
Guevarra found herself in a tough situation, but received soothing words from Keaveney.
"Coach told me to take a deep breath and relax," Guevarra said. "After I got the second out I felt really relaxed because I knew I just had to get that last out."
Guevarra induced a ground out, with Chiorazzi staying put. A Carly Toscano bunt in front of the plate went for a hit, but Guevarra registered her 16th strikeout to end the inning.
"Her composure for an 11-year-old was unbelieveable," said Keaveney of Guevarra. "Reese has the experience and been in sequences like this before."
Even though his team lost, Stony Point manager Robert Alonso felt it was a great game and cited both pitchers.
"Brianna pitched one heckuva game and she (Guevarra) also pitched one heckuva game," he said.

Gilbride two-hitter lifts Pearl River to 2-1 win over New City
Winning pitcher adds RBI triple, Collura makes two pivotal catches in left field

     Tony Pinciaro

PEARL RIVER -- The ball rocketed off of Sara Herskowitz's bat and appeared to be on its' way to dropping in for a game-tieing hit in the top of the sixth inning yesterday.
Once it landed safely in left field, Brianna Keaveney would round third and race home for New City to even the score. However, New City did not get this scenario because Pearl River's Erica Collura came charging in and made a waist-high catch to end the game, giving the host a 2-1 win in the District 18 Little League sofball majors' championship series at Anderson Field.
Pearl River, which emerged from the losers' bracket, will travel to New City tonight, 7:30 p.m. for the decisive game. The winner is the District 18 champion.
Collura's grab was one of two excellent catches by her, enabling Katherine Gilbride to finish with a two-hitter. Gilbride also had a run-scoring triple in the first inning as Pearl River won its fourth consecutive game since opening the tournament with a loss to Nanuet.
Keaveney was equally impressive in defeat, also yielding two hits and she had five strikeouts.
Ironically, when Collura was selected for the all-star team, Pearl River manager moved her to the outfield.
"I told her, 'I think I am going to put you in left field,' " Wolfe said. "Erica said that she would do anything for the team. Then she kept saying that nothing comes out to her, and today, she makes two awesome catches that saved us."
In the fourth inning, Collura robbed Melanie Lerche of a hit, running in and making a catch below the waist which kept New City hitless. However, Collura's grab in the sixth inning was a game-saver.
Keaveney had an infield single sandwiched around two outs in the sixth inning. Lerche reached safely on an error, pushing Keaveney to second. On a 1-1 Gilbride offering, Herskowitz ripped it. Collura, who was playing deep on New City's clean-up hitter, was on the move immediately and after approximately four strides, watched the ball right into her glove.
Once Herskowitz made contact, Gilbride whipped around to watch the play and was pleased with the result.
"When I turned around, I realized Erica was in good position and I also remembered that earlier in the game she made a really good catch," said Gilbride, a 13-year-old eighth-grader-to-be at Pearl River Middle School.
Going in, Gilbride knew it was going to be a pitcher's duel between her and her travel softball teammate. Knowing Keaveney so well, Gilbride provided the scouting report to her teammates.
"I told them that she was pretty fast and accurate and that we had to go up and swing because she will throw strikes," Gilbride explained.
Gilbride recorded a big cut against Keaveney in the form of a run-scoring triple in the first inning. The hit, to right center, scored Jules Madigan, who had walked and stole second.
Pearl River doubled its lead to 2-0 in the third. Katie Vinci opened with a walk, stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Vinci scored on a third strike in the dirt, resulting in Herskowitz throwing to first base to get the out.
New City scored its run in the fifth when Danielle Borelli scored on an error.
Wolfe continues to be impressed by her team's approach. Pearl River, a state finalist two consecutive years, lost in the first round of the tournament, which has been a rarity.
"I told the girls that everyone wa out to get them because they are two-time state finalists," Wolfe said. "The girls have worked really hard and come back since that loss to Nanuet in the first game."

Stony Point takes winners' bracket final behind Greeley
    Greeley tosses four-hitter against Ramapo

     Tony Pinciaro

STONY POINT -- Stony Point's offense has been as scalding hot as the intense heat that blanketed the area this week.
Stony Point entered the winners' bracket final of the District 18 Little League majors division against Ramapo, on fire, scoring 12 runs in its semi-final win over East Ramapo. Stony Point was hoping to carry over the hot hitting into this game.
Not only did Stony Point continue wielding the aluminum, it executed in every facet of the game and went on to a 10-0 win over Ramapo in five innings at Veteran's Park.
Stony Point moves on to the final and will await the team that emerges from the losers' bracket. Meanwhile, Ramapo will face the winner of South Orangetown-Suffern in the losers' bracket final. According to Stony Point manager Brian Coyle, the championship game is scheduled fo Wednesday at a site and time to be determined.
John Greeley tossed a four-hitter with 10 strikeouts to earn the win. Greeley also pitched in offensively, going 3 for 3, including a triple and double, and scored three runs. Stony Point collected 11 hits with Brian Bohlander and Rob McFadden each having two. Bohlander also drove in three runs.
"We've been working on making more contact with the ball and taking the ball to right center, especially the off-speed pitches," said the 13-year-old Greeley, an eighth-grader-to-be at Fieldstone Secondary School.
Eight of Stony Point's hits were either to right field or center field.
Stony Point came out swinging against Ramapo ace Robert Iametti. Dan Wirchansky worked a walk and Greeley drilled a double to the gap in left center field, moving Wirchansky to third. Wirchansky scored on a fielder's choice and Greeley followed him home on a throwing error on the play. Bohlander made it 3-0, touching home on a double play.
"We knew he (Iametti) was a good pitcher so we were looking fastball and adjusting to his off-speed pitches," Greeley said.
Coyle said his team spent its previous practice hitting the ball to right field and right center. He was impressed with his team's approach at the plate.
"The guys have been patient and they are having better at-bats," Coyle said.
Greeley was in a small jam in the bottom of the first. C.J. Grecco and Brad Perich each singled with two outs, but Greeley slammed the door on the mini threat with a strike out to end the inning.
Greeley was in control throughout, registering a first-pitch strike on 14 batters and consistently working ahead in the count. His curveball was dancing and he added in a few changeups to keep Ramapo off balance.
"Ramapo can hit and they are a very good team so John mixed his pitches very well and pitched a fantastic game," Coyle said.
Stony Point's defense turned in the play of the game in the top of the fourth inning. With two outs and Ramapo runners on second and first, Justin Weisberg laced  single to right field. Mike Martinez, who entered the game in the fourth, attacked the ball, picked it up and unleashed a laser to the cut-off man, Greeley, who, in turn, threw a strike to catcher Frankie Nigro. Nigro slapped the tag on the Ramapo baserunner to end the inning.
"We work on relays alot in practice and we do drills at the end of practice to see who has the quickest release," Greeley said. "Michael made a really good throw to me and Frank did a really good job."

District 18 Tournament -- Baseball
Minors

Wholey hits two home runs, leads Stony Point to District 18 Minors' title
Wholey throws two-hitter with eight strikeouts in victory over Haverstraw

       Tony Pinciaro

NANUET -- It did not take Brian Wholey long to establish his presence yesterday in the District 18 Little League baseball minors' championship game.
Wholey belted a two-run homer, over the center-field fence, in the first inning helping Stony Point quickly establish a four-run lead. Wholey took the mound in the bottom of the inning and began popping catcher Collin Musto's glove with his fastball.
The 11-year-old Wholey threw a two-hitter with eight strikeouts, hit two home runs and drove in four runs sending Stony Point to a 21-1 five-inning victory over Haverstraw at Lake Nanuet Park.
Stony Point advanced to the Section 4 Championship, Thursday through Wednesday (July 15-21) at Pepkhan Field in Patterson (Putnam County). Stony Point will play the District 19 (Orange and Sullivan counties) Thursday, 5:30 p.m.
Wholey was backed by a 19-hit showing, led by John John Morina, who went 4 for 4 and scored four runs. Chris Cooney also had four hits and scored four runs. Pacella tripled twice, doubled and drove in four runs.
Following the game and numerous pictures for parents and relatives, Stony Point took the victory lap around the field carrying its District 18 championship banner.
"It was pretty cool," said Wholey, a sixth-grader-to-be at Willow Grove Middle School, with a big smile.
Following Wholey's home run in the first inning, Cameron Price singled in Steven Greeley and Morina for a 4-0 lead. The instant lead relaxed Wholey.
"I was feeling pretty good after the home run," Wholey said. "After I threw those first two pitches and then after the first inning, I knew I had it."
Stony Point manager Ralph Pacella agreed.
"As soon as Brian hit his two-run homer, I knew th adrenaline was running through his veins," Pacella said. "Then when he threw those first fastballs for strikes, I figured he was going to be on for the rest of the game."
Prior to Stony Point breaking open the game in the fifth inning, Wholey was the beneficiary of two fine defensive plays from center fielder Pete Lombardi and third baseman Price.
In the first inning, Price dove to his left to snag a Jimmy Costin one-hopper, got his feet and threw out Costin. Ryan Eshbach led off the second inning with a sinking line drive into right-center field that was going for a hit, but Lombardi came charging, slid on his knees and grabbed the ball an eyelash above the ground. Lombardi's grab was important because Luke Martin followed with an infield single.
Wholey credited Greeley and Pacella with helping him prepare for Haverstraw. Pacella and Greeley pitched against Haverstraw in the teams' first tournament meeting, a 7-5 win.
"They told me where to pitch to the different batters and that helped me out alot," Wholey said.
       Ralph Pacella commended Haverstraw.
"Haverstraw is an extremely scrappy team and they beat some excellent teams to get out of the losers' bracket," Pacella said. "From our 7-5 game the first time we played them, I knew it would be us and them in the end."
Haverstraw manager Ricky Desch was proud of his team for a fine all-star season.
"The boys worked very hard and they showed they didn't quit," Desch said. "We played a tough Pearl River team and went to extra innings, and the first game with Stony Point was a tough game. The boys knew they had to keep winning in the losers' bracket and they did. I would love to stay with them longer.
"Stony Point is a great little team and they made the plays."

Moran stepped into the box and lined a single, bringing in Travaglini and Vetter.

District 18 Tournament - Baseball

Five-run second inning sends Ramapo to 8-6 victory over New City American
Perich two-run double highlights inning, Ramapo to meet Stony Point in winners' bracket final

       Tony Pinciaro

POMONA -- Brad Perich decided in his second at-bat, he was not going to be too patient yesterday.
The Ramapo starting pitcher felt he waited too long to swing the bat in his first plate appearance and the result was a ground out to second base. Perich stepped into the batters' box in the second inning with a different plan.
"I was thinking that I didn't want to ground out again," said the 12-year-old seventh-grader at Suffern Middle School. "I knew what I did wrong in my first at-bat, so I wanted to fix it and do better."
Perich did just that, and it could not have come at a more opprtune time as he drilled a double to straight-away center field, scoring two runs in a five-run second inning as Ramapo overcame New City American, 8-6 in a District 18 Little League baseball majors winners' bracket game at Reisman Park.
Ramapo will meet Stony Point, a 12-0 winner over East Ramapo, in the winners' bracket final at a date, site and time to be determined. New City American will play at Suffern, 7 p.m., Friday in a losers' bracket game.
Perich and his teammates found themselves trailing 3-0 going into their first at-bat, but rebounded with two runs. Ramapo loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the second, but New City pitcher Kyle Levy quickly registered a force out at home. Levy appeared ready to extricate himself from the bases-loaded situation, but C.J. Grecco drilled a single up the middle, scoring Marco Pecovic with the first run.
"C.J.'s hit gave me the confidence to go for a hit," said Perich, who allowed one earned run on four hits in three innings to get the win.
Perich followed a his double one-hopped into the fence chasing Krzysztof Zalewski and Danny Lynch home. Grecco got caught in a rundown, but escaped and scored. Perich scored the final run of the inning on an error. Along with Grecco foiling a rundown, Zalewski ran himself into a rundown when he took a wide turn of third base in the second inning. Zalewski eventually dove safely back to third base.
"Brad is one of our best hitters on the team and against Nanuet, he did the same thing with two outs," Ramapo manager Jeff Liddy said. "C.J.'s and Brad's hits were really big because if we didn't get some runs there, then it might have been a different game.
"Their relief pitcher, Steven Rosato, was outstanding."
Rosato, a tall left-hander with a fluid pitching motion, held Ramapo to two hits and one run in three innings. Ramapo staged another two-out rally in the bottom of the fift when Dylan McCavitt and Pecovic both singled. McCavitt raced to third on Pecovic's single and scored on a wild pitch.
New City American threw a scare into Ramapo in the top of the sixth inning, loading the bases with no outs on a single by Kevin Meehan, Jacob Tomanelli double and Brian Kay infield hit. Ramapo reliever Justin Weisberg got a force at home and a ground out, scoring Tomanelli. David Schiff stroked a single to center scoring Kay, but Weisberg fielded a comebacker and threw to Perich for the final out.
"Justin just stayed so relaxed," Perich said. "I got a little nervous at that point, but Justin doesn't let anything bother him."
       Liddy agreed.
"That is one of the things that I like about Justin in that he has the best head for a pitcher," Liddy said. "You can never see his emotion. He is always very consistent and has a level head."
Kay went 3 for 4 and scored twice, Levy had two hits and a run scored and Priesel drove in two runs for New City American.

Two-run fourth inning the difference as Stony Point beats Haverstraw, 7-5 in winners' bracket finale
Wholey hits two-run homer, Morina catch preserves the win

VALLEY COTTAGE -- Brian Wholey hit a two-run homer and Stony Point received RBI from five players yesterday as it defeated Haverstraw, 7-5 in a District 18 little League baseball minors' division winners' bracket final at Liberty Elementary School.
Stony Point advances to the championship game Sunday, at a site and time to be determined. Haverstraw goes right to the losers' bracket final where it will play the winner of Ramapo-South Orangetown today, 7 p.m. at Liberty Elementary School.
After Stony Point scored four runs in the top of the third, Haverstraw answered back with four runs of its own to take a 5-4 lead. However, Stony Point had a quick retort.
Stony Point scored twice in the top of the fourth inning on run-scoring hits from Collin Musto and John John Morina. Winning pitcher Raymond Pacella had a sacrifice fly, adding an insurance run in the top of the fifth.
Morina would make the play of the game, according to Stony Point manager Ralph Pacella, when the rightfielder made a "game-saving diving catch."
"Haverstraw on a runner on second base with one out when the ball was hit down the right-field line," Stony Point manager Ralph Pacella explained. "John John came in on it, dove and caught the ball. If that ball landed it would have put the tieing run on base and, if it got by him, then anything was possible."
Stony Point will have a few days off before taking the field again Sunday.
"It help us keep our pitching staff in tact and the team is really excited and looking foward to their next game," Ralph Pacella said.

District 18 Tournament-Softball

New City overcomes Nanuet in a slugfest, 16-13 in majors winners' bracket final
Ritsick has three hits in 15-hit showing, Borelli drives in three runs

     Tony Pinciaro

NANUET -- Through their four games combined in the District 18 Little League softball Majors' division tournament, New City's Briana Keaveney and Nanuet's Rebecca Ferro were quite stingy.
Keaveney had a pair of shutouts and Ferro allowed five runs, but those came after Nanuet had established a huge lead in a victory over Pearl River.
Based on this and the sports adage that suggests "good pitching stops good hitting," a windmillers' duel was highly anticipated last night as the teams played in the winners' bracket final at Lake Nanuet Park.
However, instead of low-scoring affair, the fans were treated to a back-and-forth slugfest with New City eventually prevailing, 16-13.
New City advances to the championship, 7 p.m. Sunday, July 11 at a site and time to be determined, A New City victory in this game would give it the District 18 title. Nanuet fast forwards to the losers' bracket final 7 p.m. Friday, July 9, at a site and time to be determined. Nanuet will await the winner of Stony Point-South Orangetown-Pearl River and Haverstraw. Whichever of these five teams emerges from the losers' bracket will play New City Sunday.
New City compiled 15 hits, including three by Nicole Ritsick, who also scored three runs. Danielle Borelli knocked in three runs, Melanie Lerche had two hits, scored four runs and drove in a run and Sarah Brauer went 3 for 3 with a RBI.
Nanuet, which had nine hits, was led by Alana Vezza, who doubled twice, singled and drove in a game-high five runs. Annah Stein added two hits and two RBI.
"We were talking about it before the game that Nanuet was a good team and we were hoping to scrape together three-four runs," New City manager Bill Amatuzzo said.
The lead changed hands four times with New City seizing it for good with a six-run fourth inning. Trailing 16-9 entering the sixth, Nanuet had one last surge, closing to within the final score with no outs, before Keaveney ended it.
Amatuzzo was fortunate enough to receive a scouting report from Keaveney, who plays travel softball with many of the Nanuet players.
"I think it kind of helped because I know their players, how they hit and how they play defense," said Keaveney, who had two hits and a RBI. "I told them that their pitcher (Ferro) was a good, consistent pitcher with a good changeup she would throw frequently."
Nanuet jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, but New City answered with two in the bottom of the inning and five in the second. Nanuet scored twice in the third and put up three more, all with two outs, in the top of the fourth to take an 8-7 lead. Vezza had a run-scoring double in each inning and Stein laced a two-run single, up the middle, in the fourth inning.
Whatever momentum Nanuet had was quickly erased in the bottom of the fourth as New City countered with six runs. Carly Amatuzzo, Sara Herskowitz and Brauer all had run-scoring hits in the barrage.
"We knew Nanuet was a good, well-coached team and they have a good pitcher," Amatuzzo said. " The girls remained focused, were patient and swung the bats beautifully. They rose to the ocassion."
Nanuet manager Joe LaChiana credited his girls with "playing their hearts out." He cited his team for doing an excellent job with the aluminum against Keaveney.
"We geared up the pitching machine to 60 miles per hour four days in-a-row, including two hours today, and they came around and were on it," LaChiana said.  "After the game, when we looked at the scoreboard and saw we put up 13 runs, we did what we wanted to do. The important stat was the six errors we made that allowed them to score some of those 16 runs."
