DOHERTY'S DANDY DOZEN WINTER 2009-10 GUIDELINES

POLL EDITOR:

Tom Doherty had a 33 year career in the Pearl River School District as a Teacher, Coach, and Athletic Director. Since he retired in 2003, he has remained active on the Rockland Sports scene with volunteer work for such organizations or programs as The Rockland County Coaches Association, The Rockland County Senior Athlete of the Season Program, The Rockland County Sports Hall of Fame, The Rockland County Track & Field Hall of Fame, and The Pearl River High School Sports Hall of Fame.

CONCEPT:

At the end of each season, Tom  will publish his "Doherty's Dandy Dozen" of the top 12 Rockland Teams along with eight  "Honorable Mention" selections for the outstanding Rockland County Sports News web-site at  www.RocklandSportsNews.com  and its hard-working founder, Tony Pinciaro. The selections will be by Tom alone and will not reflect the opinions of Tony or his web-site.

GUIDELINES:

Tom will evaluate teams on the following criteria in order:

1.) National Prominence--though quite rare, one of our teams could be listed in one of the recognized final National polls.

2.) New York Federation Results--post season play against the best in New York from the public, private, and independent schools.

3.) New York State Championship Results--post season play against the best in New York by school size.

4.) Final State Rankings--by the New York State  Sportswriters Association  or NYSSCOGS.

5.) Regional Results--post season play beyond Section One Championships.

6.) Section One Championship  Results--post season play in the Sectionals.

7.) Rockland County Championship  Results--competition for County Titles.

8.) League Championship Results--including regular season and post-season league tourneys.

NYSSWA DYNASTIES:

Not sure how many of you know that the New York State Sportswriters Association has begun its latest project to identify the "Great Sports Dynasties Around New York State"? I have volunteered to do the research for Rockland County. There is one main criteria  to be included in this discussion--A team must have at least one official NYSPHSAA State Championship Trophy on its resume since 1978. I welcome any and all input as we recognize the Great Sports Dynasties in Rockland County over the last three decades!

COMMENTARY:
